Beautiful Display of Artist Handcrafted Bookmarks in LSAD Library

The year 2010 marked the eighth annual Bookmarks series put on by the “Centre for Fine Print Research” at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK. The theme is different each year, and in 2010, it was decided to limit participants to librarians. The result is a spectacular array of materials, designs, sizes, and types of handmade bookmarks from thirty-six participating librarians. Participating artists each hand-produce an edition of one hundred signed and numbered bookmarks to give away through distribution boxes at venues around the world. Each bookmark has the website address which brings visitors to the gallery of artworks online. Each participant receives a packet that contains one of each submission, then the rest are released to the public. Over the last seven years distribution has taken place in more than sixty participating galleries, bookstores and libraries in Italy, The Netherlands, the UK, Ireland, France, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Singapore, Turkey, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Cyprus, Croatia, New Zealand, Japan, Australia and the USA. Over 280 artists have contributed more than 28,000 bookmarks to the eight projects to date. Somewhere in this process, accidents can happen, as I work with very wet paint and different types of paper. It is these very accidents that can decide what the picture will become. Nina Ricci, Guy Laroche, and Yves St. Laurent are just some of the top designers making up a veritable who's who of fashion at the London College of Fashion's Woolmark Company Collection. These 'cool' wool fashions may no longer be on the catwalk but they can be seen online via the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS).

This week over 2000 newly digitised images have been launched online which complement these vintage fashions by key couturiers. These newly digitised images include examples from the ready-to-wear market by manufacturers such as British Home Stores, Berkertex, Windsmoor, Susan Small, and Marks & Spencer, as well as including more examples by top designers such as Mary Quant and Christian Dior.

The black and white photographs date from the 1940's through to the early 1980's and capture both the fashion of the time and the style of photography. The press releases, which in some cases are still attached to the photographs, give additional information about the garments, designers, manufacturers, photographers and any points of interest reflecting the promotional style and language of the time. All of the images were generously donated to the London College of Fashion from The International Wool Secretariat, now The Woolmark Company.

VADS now provides access to over 4,800 images from the Woolmark Company collection, which complements a number of other London College of Fashion collections already available online including its College Archive, Paper Patterns Collection, Cordwainer’s Shoe Collection, and Gala Cosmetics Archive.

Hi All, we're delighted to have you all back, It's been a lonely 'ol Summer without the vast majority of our students and patrons.

However in your absence we have spring cleaned and bought, bought, bought! We have fantastic new book stocks in both campus libraries (check out "new books" on our homepage), a seriously amazing new DVD collection (10 new Stanley Kubricks, 7-49 Up, Fellini's 8 1/2 weeks, Musica Futurista-art of noises, Rainer Werner Fassbinder Collection 1973-1982, anthology of noise and electronic music.....the list goes on and on) and many new journals (show Details Paris, Show Details World and Show Details Men, to name a few).

This Summer we also said farewell to a treasured Library staff member Margaret MacMahon, a very special Lady who retired this August and who will be missed terribly by all of us. We had an old shindig to wish her the very best, and above are a few photos.

Head of Department of Art and Design took us on a "secret history" of her reading.. and what a delight it was!

What was your favourite childhood book? The Adventures of "Robin Hood" by Roger Lancelyn Green. In fact, I wanted to be Robin Hood for most of my childhood. From the age of nine or so, I was also fascinated by mythology, especially Norse tales of the gods.
What was the book that had the most influence on you in your college days? That’s a tricky one, as I spent a huge amount of my college days reading. Possibly "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson, the most perfect ghost story ever written.
Do you have any memory or story about your college library? Sitting in a cosy nook reading armloads of novels that had absolutely nothing to do with my designated courses…I believe I termed it ‘reading around the subject’.
If you were stranded on a desert Island what book would you like to have with you? One book? I’m afraid I’d need more. Preferably a library. But in the absence of same, I’d like "The Bloody Chamber" by Angela Carter, "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt, the complete works of Shirley Jackson, the collected works of Jane Austen and the complete works of Shakespeare.

Brid Foster, Deputy Institute Librarian, Retires

Brid Foster began her career in the LIT when the Library was a Porto cabin with buckets strewn around to collect the dripping rainwater! She worked tirelessly through the years to improve the services and oversaw the renovation of both campus Libraries. She had an uncanny knowledge of the materials and was a blessing to any student struggling with their research. As Deputy Librarian for the LIT & LSAD. She was a very popular member of staff amongst both academic and administrative personnel and will be dearly missed by all. To mark the occasion we had a lovely celebration in the Greenhills Hotel, where Brid was surrounded by friends and family, presented with gifts and danced the night away. (pictured below)

October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month ant to mark it The Dyslexia Association of Ireland is inviting all book clubs (and other interested groups) to join our Novel Idea ... Read for Dyslexia Campaign. With your support the Dyslexia Association will be able to provide more specialist tutorial assistance to help people with dyslexia to discover the joy of reading. How? Every €40 raised will provide one hour of specialist tuition for a group of people with dyslexia.
Book clubs can help to raise funds in any way they choose, e.g. collecting donations at your next book club meeting, selling second-hand books, a sponsored reading marathon, a coffee morning, or a book-themed quiz night. The more novel the idea the better. REVIEW IF LIBRARY IRELAND WEEK

Limerick Institute of Technology kicked off a week of activities with the Launch of Library Ireland Week for the Limerick Region. The event was held in LIT’s Millennium Theatre and was attended by local and regional Librarians, members of the Institute and members of Limerick’s Business Community. In keeping with the theme of 2009 Library Ireland Week, “Libraries: Inspiring Entrepreneurship” and incorporating International Women’s Day, the guest speaker was Dorothy Quinn, President of “Network Limerick” an organisation for women in business, the professions and the arts. Dorothy spoke highly about the benefit of both academic and Public Libraries for any entrepreneurs, of the vital role that Libraries play in our communities, and finished with some anecdotes about her own personal experiences.
Throughout Library Week the Librarians gave tutorials on databases, bibliographic software and search engines. A stand was placed on the LIT Streetscape, where Librarians were at hand to offer advice and information on Library resources (while also giving away a few generously donated promotional gifts!)
The Library also held some competitions, a library quiz, which was a great success as the simple multiple choice questions encouraged many applicants while also helping to reinforce some Library Information. Another competition, “Write a Limerick about the Library” asked the patrons to compose a Limerick beginning with the line; “The Library is a wonderful space…”, the amount of entries was staggering and we’ve had great fun reading them. Here is one of our winners:

Someday – for the crack…
I’ll bring them all back
In a truck with a smile on my face”
All in all a busy week was had by both staff and patrons and now we face into the second half of the academic year with renewed gusto!

5 NEW DATABASES!

L.I.T. library are delighted to announce the introduction of 5 new online databases, 4 of which are Ebsco databases acquired in association with the IRel initiative. These databases cover a wide range of subject disciplines, and will be of benefit to all L.I.T.’s student body. The 4 Ebsco databases are as follows: 1. Academic Source Premier – “The world’s largest scholarly, fulltext multidiscipline database..”. Coverage includes biology, chemistry, engineering, I.T., physics and psychology to name but a few. 2. Business Source Premier - “The industry’s most popular business research database”. Its extensive fulltext content includes, all business disciplines, as well as, market research reports, industry reports, country reports, company profiles and S.W.O.T. analyses 3. Regional Business News – A supplemental database to customers of Business Source Premier with access to over 50 regional business publications U.S.A.). 4. UK/ Ireland Reference Centre – A database of British and Irish reference sources, including encyclopaedias, photos and maps.
And finally ,our fifth new database 5. PubMed Central, a free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature, provided by the United States, National Institutes of Health (N.I.H.)

WRITE A “LIMERICK” ABOUT THE LIBRARY COMPETITION Origins of the limerick: In the history of Irish Literature the town of Croom , in the heart of the County limerick, is celebrated as the meeting place of the 18th century “Fili na Maighe” (the Gaelic poets of the Maigue). This was the original birthplace of the “Limerick”! How do I compose one? A Limerick is a five-line poem written with one couplet and one triplet. The rhyme pattern is a a b b a with lines 1, 2 & 5 containing 3 beats and rhyming, and lines 3 & 4 having 2 beats and rhyming. They often contain hyperbole, onomatopoeia, idioms, and puns.The last line of a good limerick contains the PUNCH LINE or "heart of the joke”. As part of Library Ireland week we are holding a Limerick Competition. All you have to do is use this line as a starter point; “THE LIBRARY IS A WONDERFUL PLACE”…….. Libraries: inspiring entrepreneurship”
LIT Library Services join forces with Network Ireland to launch Library Ireland Week in the Limerick Region

LIT Library Services is delighted to announce its partnership with Network Ireland for the launch of the 2009 Library Ireland Week in the Limerick Region.The launch will take place at the LIT Millennium Theatre at 3:00 p.m. Monday, 2nd March, 2009 with the help of Ms. Dorothy Quinn, President of Network Limerick.

The theme of this year’s Library Ireland Week is “Libraries: inspiring entrepreneurship” and because the week coincides with International Women’s Day, LIT is taking the opportunity to celebrate women in business and entrepreneurship and the role Librarians can play in inspiring these entrepreneurs.
Jerald Cavanagh, Institute Librarian at LIT says “The role of the Librarian has never been so important than in these challenging economic times. What we need now is inspiring ideas and vision and Libraries and Librarians have the knowledge and expertise to instil vital research skills and guide potential entrepreneurs through the substantial information resources provided by Libraries and the enormous information resource that is the Internet."
Library Ireland Week 2009 takes place from the 2nd to the 9th of March 2009 in libraries all over Ireland and is a national celebration of the work of Librarians and Libraries in Ireland highlighting their work by holding events, drawing attention to the issues Librarians and Libraries face and celebrating their achievements.
Dorothy Quinn, President of Network Limerick – an organisation for women in business, the professions and the arts - said the role of libraries for personal and professional use is invaluable: "I have used libraries myself for the purposes of researching my masters thesis and continue to use libraries today. Network Limerick encourages its members to use libraries and realises their vital role in inspiring entrepreneurship."
Library Ireland Week in the Limerick Region is a joint initiative of Libraries from University of Limerick, Limerick Institute of Technology, Limerick City Library, Limerick County Library and Mary Immaculate College.

IRISH TIMES ARCHIVE

The Irish Times Archive is a new electronic library acquisition since September 2008. The archive is a major source of research and general interest alike. It can be accessed via the LIT Library Website http://mislibsrv.lit.ie/ (select the Online Databases link). The archive also contains both a digital version of the newspaper back to 1859 and a text version of articles back to 1996. Phrase searching To find an exact phrase place quotation marks at either side of your search term, e.g. “active learning” . If you are searching for an event use the term that may have been used in the report of the day, e.g. World War 1 was known as the Great War. Terms that are used in modern day language may differ from those terms used at the time when the article was published. Search Weighting Higher weighting can be given to more important words by placing a plus (+) sign in front of them. Less important words are preceded by a minus (-) sign. For example to search for documents on wind energy but not about systems you would specify the following search string: +wind +energy –systems. Sorting Options You can determine how the results of your search are displayed; by the closest match, newest or oldest articles. Refine Options Search results can be refined by newspaper section, e.g. finance, education or property. Results can also be further refined by date or by inserting additional words into the relevant fields.

FANTASTIC ARTISTS' BOOKS IN ART COLLEGE CAMPUS

The Library of the Limerick School of Art & Design is delighted with the success of their special collection of Artists’ Books. Many of these Artists books are published by Coracle press in Co. Tipperary and are usually limited editions.
These books are not about Art, but rather Art expressed through Book Form. The collection is displayed near the main desk of the Library and all items can be borrowed for two week periods. The purpose of the Artist/writer is to involve the reader more completely in the viewing process by looking at how the text, the pictures and the physical form all combine to lend greater meaning for the reader/viewer. The traditional formats of books are played around with and the end results are usually highly creative. This collection is a welcome addition to the Art Library.

RED FRIDAY..MUNSTER DAY IN THE LIBRARY

Staff were delighted to dress in red on friday the 23rd of May as a token of their support for Munster.....who won the Heineken Cup Final in Cardiff on Saturday 24th May to the delight of the country.

Yes, its that time of year again when we celebrate the wonderful world of Libraries, Librarians, Information and the Internet Library. Library Ireland Week is happening in Libraries all over the country from the 3rd to the 9th of March and LIT Library is partaking in these celebrations by hosting various special events. First off we have the: Minister Willie O'Dea opening the Launch of Library Ireland Week in the Millennium Theatre Foyer at 2.30pm on the 3rd of March.
Then during the week you could maybe drop into the LIT Library Ireland Week Streetscape to sample some of the atmosphere or pick up some “on the spot online database tuition, some of our pocket Library Guides or maybe the latest edition of the LIT Library Newsletter.
